OK. been a while...lots to tell, no time to do it. Working on another series of music compostion classes with the kids which will culminate in a musical at the end of the summer. Very excited about that. Reworking the website to incorporate the loads of random stuff I've managed to squeeze in between experiments. I am a bit concerned that my "fun time" projects have transitioned from making art to much more practical pursuits (building an open source MAGE device to evolve a range of model organisms based on their different transformation properties to explore the concept of combinatorial network evolution in model organisms.

Had some interesting feedback about the piece that's up in Fardom Gallery this month. Next iteration will be a bit less literal but more colourful. (I'm totally obsessed with e.kelly). Here are some concept sketches I used for the final. I used Processing to convert the nucleotide sequences of hemagglutinin and neuramidase subtypes for flu strains into transparent shades of standardized nucleotide traces (I guess particularly relevant after H1N1 came to light recently).

Audible graffiti project re-lived: generally based on image-segmentation algorithms (Hough transform, line detection, etc) that convert stenciled images into QR-codes that map to sampled sounds. the real-time version is based on a matlab script that processes a video feed into an 8x8 array of values based on color/light intensity/edge detection. Idea is to compose and play music mapped to a monome with imagery/colors from the gallery. It's sort of like the monome-based piece I had up in the winter but this one requires audience dance participation... sequined, colourful clothing helps too.
